How to Spot the Silver Lining
Claim – Knowing it’s there puts it there.
Explain – Neils Bohr, a famous physicist, proved that by looking at an object you change its molecular composition. I simplify that to Hebrews 11:1 , “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of which is unseen.” Just reaffirming each day that the good will be there when the storm passes provides the strength to see the silver lining in your situation. The good is and always will be there if only we expect it to be there.
So many times I hear people give rise to the negative by exclaiming that the situation is terrible. That’s like throwing negative ions into a storm cloud and wondering why the lightening increases. My recommendation has been and continues to be, “Speak what you want as if you have it, not what you have as if you want it.” Dr. BJ Fogg, a Stanford behavioral scientist and author of Tiny Habits and Digital Persuasion, has seen tremendous success with people saying “It’s going to be a great day” each morning when their feet hit the floor.
Story – This picture came on a stormy night when I had a late workshop that ran even later due to one enthusiastic attendee that would not leave. I found myself driving back from Foley on fumes because the gas station in Magnolia Springs was closed. In the darkened sky, as the rain started, I saw this incredible circle of light. I pulled over, stuck my iPhone out the window and clicked. This shot appeared, and instantly I smiled. The power lines represent God’s loving power that was always there for me. Rather than a silver lining, God sent me a doughnut hole to remind me his light was still there for me. And I made it home!
Questions to ask yourself:
What values will you absolutely not abandon?
Who do you put in your boat to ride out the storm?
