Diana Ross and her Motown team got this so right. The fact that we are now told to do the opposite makes it all the more real to me. As a Boomer in a community that is still before our logarithmic storm, I am practicing social distancing as much as possible. In a position where I counsel small businesses and friends on how to cope and survive, I am reminded daily how much isolation is a dangerous mental state for us all.
All predators like to separate individual prey from the pack and CVD-19 is the doing a great job of separating each of us from the American pack, also know as freedom. Free markets can no longer associate, religion can no longer be exercised together, and free movement is restricted. I find it interesting that this virus originated in a country that abhors these American freedoms. Even my quiet runs in the morning don’t relieve my irritation with all this. Acceptance alone is not the answer.
James said, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” I accept the faith test part and wonder about the maturity opportunity lesson being offered. How do I/we persevere with this loss of freedom?
The answer is in the song. We can touch somebody without touching them physically. We all know the feeling of gratitude after receiving an unexpected thank you card or email. We all know how sometimes a phone call or text immediately brings us out of our mental funk. “Today is the day the Lord has made, and I will rejoice and be glad in it” by calling somebody that God puts in my head. I am just going to tell them I was thinking about them and wanted to see how they were doing.
Make this world a better place if you can, and we can!
